Celebrating Black Creatives in the FIDM Community

From established fashion designers to entrepreneurial students, we encourage you to support and follow Black artists and business owners in the FIDM community. Here’s a roundup of 20 Black creatives who are sure to inspire you.

Alumna Faith Ibrahim is the Founder of the LA-based premium menswear line Vrēde 919 (pictured in main image at left), which is available via Wolf & Badger. Pediatric Anesthesiologist and Graduate Dominique Aimee Jean, M.D. is a speaker and fashion stylist. She’s the Founder of Haute Healing, a non-profit that provides makeovers to ill and disadvantaged young people. Learn more at hautehealing.org and on Instagram @dominique_aimee @hautehealing.

FIDM Faculty TJ Walker is the influential Co-Founder of Cross Colours. The brand, known for its bold designs and social justice messages, was recently the subject of an exhibition at LA’s California African American Museum. Alumna Brittany Hampton is a Designer, Stylist, and Content Creator known for winning E!’s reality competition, House of DVF, and becoming Diane von Furstenberg’s first-ever Global Brand Ambassador. Kenyan-born Alumnus Daniel Kasidi (pictured above) is the Founder and CEO of the accessory brand Rastaclat, a collection of creative shoelace bracelets sold at retailers such as Tilly’s, Zumiez, Finish Line, and Lids, among others. LA native and FIDM Alumnus Gavin “Mizzle” Mathieu is the Founder and Creative Director of the streetwear brand Supervsn (pictured in main image at right), known for its graphic-emblazoned hoodies, sweats, and tees. Prior to becoming a celebrity Fashion Designer, Alumnus Octavius Terry was a nine-time Track and Field All-American and three-time NCAA National Champion. FIDM Student Mingo earned a B.S. from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Fashion Merchandising prior to moving to Los Angeles where she received an Advanced Associates degree in Fashion Design. Born and raised in Fremont, California, I’sha Dunston is a graduate of FIDM and the Founder of Izayla (pictured in main image at center), a sustainable ready-to-wear luxury brand for women made in Los Angeles. Looks By Ashè Taylor is a styling company founded by the FIDM Graduate and former FIDM Fashion Club President in 2015. Prior to becoming an entrepreneur, the LA native was an E-commerce Site Merchandiser at Fashion Nova. Learn more on Instagram @looksbyashetaylor @ashetaylor_.

Alumna Brie Henderson (work pictured above) is a Character Designer and Visual Development Artist for TV animation projects, film, and children’s books. She’s currently a Colorist for DC Comics’ Nubia, and has worked for Sony Pictures Animation, Marvel Animation Studios, and Childish Gambino. FIDM National Scholarship Competition winner Asia Alea Dean is a Model, Influencer, and Entrepreneur. The Fashion Design Student is the Owner of the online Barb’d Boutique, featuring apparel, swimwear, shoes, and accessories. Learn more on Instagram @theasiaalea @_barbdboutique.

Alumna Angela Dean is the Owner of Deanzign, makes body-con dresses under the Angela Dean Collection, and sells shapewear under the brand Shaped by an Angel, an innovative line of shapers specifically tailored to five different body shapes. Learn more at deanzign.com and on Instagram @deanzign.

Footwear Design & Development Student Briona Moss recently came in third place in the competitive Joseph C. Moore Design Scholarship Contest created by the Fashion Footwear Association of New York (FFANY) and the prestigious Arsutoria School in Milan. Learn more on Instagram @brionasketches @babytwix143.

Designer Francesca Lake-Garcia (pictured above left) was born in London and raised in Jamaica. As a DEBUT 2016 designer, she won Chairing Styles and showed at Fashion Week El Paseo and Phoenix Fashion Week. She returned to DEBUT last year as a designer for influencer Kandee Johnson. FIDM Social Ambassador and current Merchandise Product Development Student Chazlyn Stunson wants to have her own ready-to-wear line in the future. She’s also a 2020 Social Ambassador for the National Retail Federation. Learn more on Instagram @chazlyn.yvonne.

Designer Kevan Hall has dressed stars such as Taraji P. Henson, Debra Messing, Vanessa Williams, and Allison Janney.
